The Civic Projects: Serving 50 States in 50 DaysTHE CIVIC PROJECTS VISIT NEBRASKA!

If you looked up “Community Service” in the dictionary you would likely find their photos.  Look closely next time you are on vacation and you might just see them volunteering at a local non-profit organization.  Kirsten L’Orange and Tim Malcolm, founders of The Civic Projects, are literally changing the world one state at a time.

On January 4, 2010 the couple gave up their professional careers and east coast home to begin a 14,000-mile cross country journey to promote social awareness and service by volunteering at 50 community organizations in 50 states in 50 days.  They will donate an estimated 800 hours of community service, or roughly the value of $16,200 to local non-profit agencies.   Why?

“As the number of unemployed Americans climbs to approximately 15 million and charitable giving declined for the first time in 20 years, nonprofit organizations are struggling to meet increased service demands on smaller budgets, making volunteers even more vital to the health of our nation’s communities. The Civic Projects seeks to bring awareness to community-based service organizations hard-pressed by today’s economic climate”, states the couples website.  “The Civic Projects will serve 50 communities in all 50 states over just 50 days in an effort to create awareness and garner support for locally run service organizations, as well as motivate local residents to get out into their own communities and volunteer.”

Day 34 on the 50 day journey brought them to Nebraska: The Good Life.  They provided a day of service to the Northeast Family Center (NFC), working with youth in the Academy of Rock program.  “Kirsten and Tim are passionate about their mission to promote volunteerism in communities nationwide,” said NFC Executive Director, Kodi Bonesteel.  “Their energy is contagious and we are grateful to have been part of their journey.”

Perhaps you are a skilled drummer and have time to donate a half-hour lesson to an aspiring young artist each week.  Maybe you have an interest in becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister.  Is it possible your family could circle one afternoon a month to serve at a local animal shelter together?  Or perhaps your time is already overcommitted, but you have an extra $5 to donate to your local United Way Campaign.  Whatever your passion for giving back start today and be the change you want to see in the world.
